The tops are off and the claws are out as we pit our four favourite convertibles against each other.

Two convertibles that provide some bang for your buck, and two of the most luxurious convertibles on the market. Who gets your vote?

Sub 40K: Fiat 500C vs. Mazda MX-5 RF

Fiat 500C

A contentious contender in the convertible category, the Fiat 500C is everything you love about small cars with small price tags, with a little bit of wow above your head.

This sleek small car has out-mastered and outlasted both the Mini and VW's Beetle in the transition from vintage nostalgia to become a modern-day must-have.

Not exactly a convertible, the 500C instead has a fold-down sunroof that offers the thrill of a top-down convertible, but with the protection from the wind that a sunroof offers. However, because of the choice to mix a regular sunroof with a convertible roof, like all convertibles you must be going below 60km/h to open it. Because of its more than slightly appealing price tag, the Fiat can only offer a less than appealing amount of tech; offering navigation and the basics like temperature, media player and telephone on its 7-inch screen. But at less than $20k, can you really blame it?

Mazda MX-5 RF

With the sexiness of a Ferrari, at a price that won't break the bank, the Mazda MX5 is the convertible for those that love to live life in the fast lane.

Taking a mere 13 seconds to fold away its hardtop roof, Mazda has made progress in ensuring that this ride won't burst your eardrums - including more insulation to provide a quieter ride with the roof up, and extra protection from the wind with the roof down (whether or not that is a good thing is up to you).

With a speed of 0-100km/h in just over 7 seconds, nothing has been spared to ensure that the MX-5 can keep up with other speedsters way above its pay grade.

It also features a whole host of extras inside to make the drive as modern as it is magnificent, offering voice recognition software and a 6-speaker sound system.

Although it is at the higher end of the cheaper convertibles, once you're behind the wheel of an MX-5 it's easy to see that extra bit of cash has gone to good use.

The Result

Both are brilliant drives for under $40,000 - so it all depends what you want out of your drive. If you're looking for a speedy number built for two, then the MX-5 is a must-have. However, if you want all the fun of a convertible, at a price that won't stop your kids going to college - Fiat's 500C would be hard to pass up.

Prestige: Corvette Z06 vs. Aston Martin Vantage

Corvette Z06

Chevrolet's most powerful model in history, the Z06 combines style and substance for those who live a fast life, and want to look exceptional doing so.

This convertible hard-top is on the cheaper end of the spectrum, but boasts power that exceeds many other makes above its pricing point.

Clocking 100km/h in under 3 seconds, with a roaring 650 horsepower and a 6.2L V8 engine, this car has certainly earned its 'Supercar' title.

What makes the Z06 extra special are the bonus bits of technology that makes it as futuristic as it is fast. The myChevrolet app allows the driver to start and stop the car as well as lock and unlock its doors from anywhere with just a touch of your smartphones screen.

The interior also features perforated Mulan leather bucket seats making for a luxurious and comfortable drive.

This Corvette certainly lives up to its legendary name, with a price that seems reasonably affordable in the world of high-end vehicles.

Corvette Z06

Aston Martin Vantage

For those who want to live as fast as James Bond whilst matching the man in style, Aston Martin's Vantage is the ultimate in luxurious speed.

This 2-seater, soft-top is a classic in every sense of the word. Its design and handling is everything that makes Aston Martin a classic, something that is sorely missed in the Vantage.

Its 4.7L V8 engine makes it just as perfect for building up speed on the freeway, as it is for city driving with its nimble, compact design.

Whilst driving an Aston Martin is often something we only ever dream of; this British classic is often outclassed in performance by its cheaper peers.

But if you're after some good old-fashioned luxury and style, the Vantage cannot be overlooked.

The Result

This one comes down to personality. Both cars are quick, and beautiful to drive, and boast more than enough sexiness and sophistication with the top up or down.

For a quality, classic drive with everything you've come to expect from an Aston Martin, the Vantage is a must-have - but for those after a more forward-thinking car, with the latest in tech and gadgets, the Corvette is the one for you.
