How to Save Fuel

Lose the weight

Get into the zone - your engine is generally most efficient at less than 2,500 rpm (lower in diesels). Change up gears for peak fuel efficiency.

Only use air conditioning when you need it. Except at slow speeds, air conditioning is preferable to the drag factor of open windows, but constant use will increase your fuel consumption.

Cruise in comfort

Cruise with the traffic flow and maintain a comfortable following distance from the car in front of you. Where possible use cruise control - maintain a constant speed and use less fuel.

Look after you car and it will look after your pocket. Check tyre pressure regularly, check wheel alignment and have your car serviced on time.

Watch the lead foot

High speeds and quick acceleration mean high fuel consumption. Travelling at 110km/h can use up to 25 per cent more fuel than travelling at 90 km/h.

Plan your trips

Drive less. You'll spend less time and less money driving if your trips are planned for efficiency. Cluster your errands together and walk to local shops if you can.\

Avoid rush hour

Avoid the crowds and use your fuel for covering distance, not sitting in traffic.

Plan your fuel purchase ahead of time. Many auto clubs and government bodies now publish current fuel prices and recent patterns. Pick your day, find an outlet that's on your way and fill up.
