What is Motor Vehicle (Car) Stamp Duty?

Motor Vehicle Stamp Duty (or Car Stamp Duty) is a Government tax payable when registering a vehicle ortransferring the registration (or title) of a car or other motor vehicle. Generally derived from the dutiable value of a vehicle and inclusive of GST, Stamp Duty is collected by the relevant Tax Revenue Office of each state.

Stamp Duty is payable within 14 days of transferring car ownership, and the fee is nominally to cover the costs of the documentation when you purchase a vehicle.

Stamp Duty is paid upon application for the registration of every vehicle, however some exemptions and concessions do apply in specific circumstances. These concessions vary from state to state, so please refer to your relevant Tax Revenue office for further information.
