Footy Stars And Their Cars

Posted by stratton on 07/09/2015 at 12:30pm

We know them as men of occasional taste and considerable talent. High stakes games and screaming fans, fast cars and big boys' toys. Footy finals are nearly upon us, and the big boys' toys have taken centre stage.

In recent years, the superstars of the AFL and NRL have given us occasional glimpses at the cars in their lives. From dream-machines to their daily-drivers, here are the ones that caught our eye.

Gary Ablett Jnr, Zac Smith and Matt Shaw were travelling in style during a recent trip to Tinsel town, rolling down Rodeo Drive in this Bugatti Veyron. The Gold Coast cheer squad might have had something to say about their choice of Tiger-town's yellow and black, but we'd hazard a guess the boys weren't too concerned with the Veyron's paint job. Nor were they thinking about storage, leaving room only for a small bag of shopping each.

Zac Smith didn't need to cross the Pacific to get in a sweet ride. His lime green 1973 Monaro GTS Sedan lit up Instagram from his own driveway.

Really missing this bad boy at the moment

From a Holden classic to the Ford heartland of Australia. This year, Ford celebrate their 90th year as sponsors of the Geelong Cats. As one of the longest standing and most famous sponsorship deals in Australian sport, we were hardly surprised to see one of the club's favourite sons, Joel Selwood, in his new Ford Ranger Wildtrak.

Joel Selwood isn't the only footy star who loves his ute. Nic Naitanui posted this shot of himself with his Toyota Hilux, as he was heading out on a fishing trip with his mates near his home in Western Australia.

However, no sooner had we branded Nic Nat as a salt-of-the-earth fisherman, we saw this photo of him appreciating the sleek lines of yet another Bugatti. Like Gary Ablett Jnr and his Gold Coast teammates, it appears the allure of French styling appealed to the big West Coast ruckman.

Trent Cotchin, however, appears to be a man of simpler pleasures, enjoying some sunshine and family time with his nephew and his Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep ticks all the boxes – comfort, style and plenty of room for the best bouffant in the business.

Nothing better than som instant family time with the young fella and finally some sunshine!! @brookelkennedy @janie_mitch

The AFL stars aren't the only footballers getting snap happy with their wheels. Beau Ryan, formerly of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and Wests Tigers, proving his artistic streak extends beyond his musical talents, capturing this impressive selfie with his Audi Q7 on the beach in Wollongong.

From the New South Wales coast to the north shore of O'ahu, the NRL boys get around. While it's not exactly route 66, Paul Gallen kept it all-American on a recent holiday to Hawaii's big island, with the new incarnation of that American classic, the Ford Mustang.

Did the whole nth shore tourist thing today even got the mustang. Good times.

For some, including Sydney Rooster's five-eighth James Maloney, their favourite car isn't a car at all. Happier getting around with his knees in the breeze, James was happy to show off his new toy, but not without a little feedback from his fans about his combination of an open-face helmet and sports bike.

Yeeewww!!! My new toy 👌👌👌

When it comes to cars though, we all know the red ones go faster.

Pat Richards of the Wests Tigers quenched his need for speed during a visit to the Three Sisters Race Circuit in the United Kingdom, driving a few laps in an Aston Martin and this Ferrari 360. However once he was done, a little nostalgia took hold, as he noted "…they had nothing on my old Ford Mondeo."
